m.i.j.
Formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the early 1990s when frontman Jeff Hanson was only 13 years old. The band was defined by Hanson’s distinctive, angelic falsetto voice, which many listeners initially mistook for a female singer. The band remained active for approximately seven years.
Caulfield released their sole full-length album, The Radio Goodnight, in 1999, along with an untitled EP. The album is still highly regarded by genre fans.
After m.i.j. broke up, Jeff Hanson transitioned into a critically acclaimed solo career, becoming the first artist signed to Kill Rock Stars based solely on a demo tape. He released three solo albums: Son (2003), Jeff Hanson (2005), and Madam Owl (2008), often performing most of the instruments himself. Hanson passed away on June 5, 2009, at the age of 31.
